Saree & Silk Dry Cleaning in Kathmandu — The Complete Care Guide

How to care for sarees, silk blouses and embroidered garments in Kathmandu. When to dry clean, what to avoid, and what a professional dry cleaning process looks like.

A silk saree can cost tens of thousands of rupees. How you care for it determines whether it lasts one wedding season or twenty years.

Why Silk and Sarees Need Special Treatment

Silk is one of the most delicate natural fibres. Water weakens silk fibres, causes colour bleeding and can permanently alter the drape of woven fabric. Embroidery threads — particularly zari (gold and silver thread) — tarnish in water and can detach if agitated in a washing machine.

For all silk sarees, silk blouses, heavily embroidered pieces and garments with zari work, dry cleaning is the only safe option.

What Happens in Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaning uses chemical solvents rather than water. The solvent penetrates the fibres, dissolves oil-based soiling and is then extracted along with the dirt. Because the fabric never becomes saturated with water, there is no risk of:

  • —Shrinkage — water causes silk fibres to contract and lose shape
  • —Colour run — dyes that are water-sensitive bleed in washing but not in solvent cleaning
  • —Embellishment damage — zari and sequins stay intact without water agitation
  • —Distortion — the woven structure of the saree is preserved

The Dry Cleaning Process at Tavo Laundry

Every saree and delicate garment goes through the following steps:

  • —Inspection: examined for stains, loose threads and pre-existing damage, all noted on the docket
  • —Pre-spotting: targeted stain treatment applied to specific areas before main cleaning
  • —Solvent cleaning: processed in a closed machine using hydrocarbon solvent (gentler than older perchloroethylene systems)
  • —Pressing: hand-finished with a steam press calibrated for the fabric weight
  • —Packaging: returned in a dust cover, folded as received

Common Saree Care Questions

Can I hand wash a cotton saree? Cotton sarees can generally be hand washed in cold water with a mild detergent, then dried in shade. Avoid wringing.

What about Banarasi or Kanchipuram silk? These heavy weaves with zari borders must always be dry cleaned. Water will permanently damage the metal thread border.

How often should I dry clean a saree I wear regularly? Every 2–3 wears, or after any event involving sweat or food contact. Storing a soiled saree damages the fabric over time.

Can you remove curry or oil stains from silk? Pre-treatment significantly improves results, but older or set stains in silk are harder to remove fully. We will advise you honestly at collection.
